lawn of T & J Enterprises. We have yet to capture on camera
the richness and spectrum of the varieties of natural emerald
green colors in this turf grass. The
effects vary throughout the day depending on the light and grass
varieties. In the picture (right) notice the greens in the drying up chemical lawns are somewhat
darker in color.

This
picture was taken 8-01-99. The weather forecast for the week, mid
90's. BioVam grown lawns resist drying out as it gets hotter, while
the non-BioVam lawns in the distance, just get browner.

Organic Lawn Care
Program
Core aerate
your lawn in the Spring, or when you first learn about our
method of turf grass management. This will help control
thatch and it will help open up the turf to air and water penetration.
It also helps get BioVam's Mycorrhizal fungi down onto the
roots of the turf.
For each
2,000 square feet of turf, mix 1 quart of BioVam with two
quarts of Planters II Mineral Fertilizer and use a drop
spreader to apply the mixture to the turf. Ten pounds of
Planters II will cover 1,000 square feet of turf.
Planters II will feed plants and bacteria in the soil.
You will find that earthworm populations will increase as they
eat the hyphae from the mycorrhiza, the bacteria, and organic
materials in the soils.
Fertilize the
lawn with Biosol Mix 7-2-3 Organic Fertilizer (Spring and late
Summer) at the rate of 55 lbs per 2,000 square feet when using
BioVam. This long lasting organic fertilizer is
food for the plants, bacteria and earthworms.
Once a week, brew
Natures Own
Growing System Tea and use a hose end sprayer to
apply the tea to the turf grass. A quart of
tea concentrate will cover 2,000 square feet of
turf. If you use Natures Own
Growing System Tea,
you can apply Biosol Mix 7-2-3 and Planters II at 1/3 the
recommended rate. The high levels of bacteria in
Natures Own
Growing System Tea will convert Biosol
Mix 7-2-3 and Planters II into plant food and
will help to convert thatch into plant food.

Note:
If you have clay soils, you may want to consider
amending those soils by the addition of Gypsum to your turf
grass areas. Mycorrhiza likes the calcium in Gypsum and
the Gypsum will help break up the clay.
Note:
If you have moss growing in your turf grass, you may want to
consider checking the pH of the soil. If it is found to
be acidic, you may want to consider applying dolomite lime to
your turf grass in order to raise the pH. You may also
want to apply Moss Out (Iron Sulfate) to control the Moss.
Note:
If your lawn develops weed problems that appear to be getting
out of control, you may want to consider the application of
Weed-Be-Gone II to your turf grasses. If your water
source is from a well and you intend to treat the turf grass
around that well, we urge you to get advice from your local
extension office before you make a decision to apply any
pesticides to your turf grasses. Please use the utmost
caution when handling or making a decision to use any
pesticides on your turf grasses.

Most of the following objectives have been met by using
BioVam Mycorrhizae inoculant and Biosol Mix fertilizer on lawns. Some were simply not observed because I
wasn't able to test that particular situation. |
Goals
to be Achieved |
Observed Results
of BioVam Lawns |
- Substantially reduce water use.
|
Cut 50% after two months.
Several accounts have been able to go to applying one inch of water once
per week onto their turf grasses. Soil drainage conditions are going
to dictate how much water reduction is realized.
|
- Substantially reduce pesticide applications.
|
Cut
80% to 90%. 100% if you want to be all organic. The reasons to use
pesticide just are significantly reduced.
|
- Substantially reduce maintenance costs.
|
40% increase in growth, 80% decrease in clippings, Fertilize spring and
fall, healthier grass. BioVam is applied once per year.
|
- Be 100% Environmentally safe.
|
100% Organic and safe.
|
- Provide a lawn that is drought tolerant.
|
The roots go down 17 inches; the sod is dense to at least a foot deep.
Less water is required. When the lawn dries out, it recovers quickly when
watered.
|
- Reduce the mowing requirements.
|
The vertical top growth is reduced 80%. Mowing is cut by 50%.
|
- Apply only Organic fertilizers.
|
Biosol
Mix is an Organic Fertilizer.
|
- Develop a lawn tolerant to heavy traffic.
|
There has been a 40% increase in new shoots and the lawn is much thicker
and handles more traffic.
|
- Develop a competitiveness against weeds.
|
The grass is much thicker and many weeds do not like
to grow where Mycorrhiza is plentiful. After three years, we are
noticing that certain weeds like dandelions are still at significantly
reduced levels, but are never totally eliminated. We are also seeing
that after three years, Black Vedic may have to be controlled. It
has taken three years for Black Vedic to invade our test lawn.
|
- The lawn must grow in direct sun and shade.
|
The Mycorrhizae inoculated lawn grows equally well in sun and shade. |
|
|
The
rhizome roots of grass became 3/16 inch to 1/4 inch thick and produced
40% new growth. |
- Develop a deeper root system.
|
The
vertical roots extend 17 inches into the soil. The sod is quite
dense in the first 12 inches.
|
- Reduces sod transplant losses and planting
shock.
|
We
have noticed that when BioVam is mixed 1:2 with sand as a carrier and drop
spread onto the ground before the sod is put down, the sod will root
much faster and develop a higher level of vitality.
|
- Increases tolerance to soil salinity and polluted soil
conditions.
|
I wasn't able to test this condition either, but Mycorrhizae typically
accomplishes that.
|
- Over grow Necrotic Ring Spot damage.
|
We
have treated damaged areas with grass seed, BioVam Mycorrhiza and
Biosol Mix fertilizer and have found that areas damaged by Necrotic Ring Spot
are over grown with turf. See our Necrotic
Ring Spot protocol.
|
- Over grow Fairy Ring
damage.
|
We
have treated damaged areas with grass seed, BioVam Mycorrhiza and
Biosol Mix fertilizer and have found that areas damaged by Fairy Ring are over
grown with turf. See our Fairy
Ring protocol.

"Chemical
Lawns" dry out.
Just on the other side of Snoopy and out in various places of this lawn,
it was starting to dry out as soon as the weather turned warm. This was the plight
year after year of a lawn subjected to "chemical care." This
was due to shallow roots that could not hold water very long.
(Untreated Lawn on Left) |
 |
"BioVam
Grown Lawns" are easy to keep green.
Eight weeks later after several days of triple digit temperatures, and
20 mile an hour winds, the same lawn after being treated with BioVam and
Biosol Mix. There are NO DRY SPOTS!
We feel that soil conditions will dictate how much water is
retained. We found that the root growth was much deeper in our
turf grass after treating with BioVam.

BioVam
Mycorrhiza
Fungi travel plant to plant.
This is three weeks after the
BioVam application. I watered by
hand and I did not water to the right of that line. My neighbor didn't water at all!
This was before it got hot. The effect of the Mycorrhizae showed green
creeping six feet into my neighbors lawn. The BioVam was applied at 1 quart per
1,000 square feet of lawn. I used 1/2 gallon on 1,800 sq feet. (This
was before an improvement to BioVam by B. Probiotics (inventor and
manufacturer of BioVam,) which now allows one
quart to treat 2,000 square feet).

The Roots go
deeper into the soil.
What about the roots? The lawn roots were no longer shallow sod
type roots. They had extended 17 inches into the soil. The water at the
bottom of this picture is from my washing down the side of the hole to expose the roots.
The roots extended 4 inches into the water. This lawn has become a totally different
lawn because of the action of the BioVam Mycorrhizae. This picture was taken at 9 weeks.
This soil is basically clay in texture. It has been loosened up by
the mycorrhiza. As we dug down below where the roots were in this
soil, we noticed that water was not soaking into the soil. Above
that point, water was able to penetrate the clay soils that had been
penetrated by the roots and mycorrhiza.
(Roots depth of a Treated Lawn) |
 |
A Healthier
Root System.
The lateral roots in this lawn are huge! These roots run laterally below
the surface of the ground. It is from these roots that new grass shoots grow. This
explains why there is easily a 50% increase in new shoots in this lawn. Some of these
roots are thicker than 3/16 and will soon be 1/4 inch thick. The vertical roots now make a
sod that is beyond 14 inches thick.

Fewer
Clippings in the first week.
The first week I only obtained one lawnmower catcher bag full of
clippings (instead of 5). This was true for the third and subsequent weeks
also. Growth in BioVam Grown lawns is focused more upon new shoots and roots than on top
growth.
(Treated Lawn on Left) |
 |
This is the second week's mowing of this 1,800
square foot lawn. This picture shows just how green this lawn truly is. I
have not been able to capture the color very well, but this one is quite close. I
have no idea why so few clippings were obtained this week. Disposal of clippings
with this lawn has been no problem. (Treated Lawn on

Moss
struggles in BioVam Grown Lawns
This picture taken October 17, 1998 at a customer's lawn in the Spokane
Valley, illustrates how grass out competes moss growing in a BioVam Grown lawn. The Moss can not compete with the grass and as the grass
grows up through the Moss and gets thicker, the Moss gets displaced.

A
Dandelion without BioVam Applied
This Dandelion at a customer site does not
have Mycorrhiza Inoculant in the soil with it. It is about 20 feet away from a lawn
that has been treated with Mycorrhiza inoculant. The next picture shows what
Dandelions look like in a treated lawn.
(Untreated Lawn on Left) |
 |
Dandelions
in a lawn inoculated with BioVam Mycorrhiza.
These Dandelions
were present when this lawn was inoculated with BioVam Mycorrhiza.
In BioVam Grown lawns the grass is the dominant plant. As the
grass thickened and the Mycorrhizal process became entrenched these Dandelions,
unlike the one above, are finding it difficult to compete with the
mycorrhiza treated grass. They are laying limp on the
ground and their leaves are turning yellow. The dandelion populations
stay low, but don't seem to be eliminated. Each year, we pull about
6-10 dandelions out of our 1,800 square foot test lawn.
(Treated Lawn on Left) |
 |
Grass not inoculated with
BioVam Mycorrhiza will turn yellow if it is covered.
A sheet of
steel was left on this lawn for 2.5 days. When it was lifted up, the grass
underneath was all yellow. It stayed yellow for more than a week.
(Untreated Lawn on Left) |
 |
Grass Inoculated with
BioVam Mycorrhiza stayed Green!
The same plate as
above was left on a lawn inoculated with Mycorrhiza for 2.5 days. When the plate was
lifted up, the grass was as green as that which was not covered. It was pressed
down. After watering for a short time, you couldn't tell where the steel plate had
been placed on this lawn.
